Ultrasonic Welding

A joining technology for non-ferrous metals: short cycles, stable conductivity, no additional materials.

Schunk ultrasonic welding head with an inserted cable

The ultrasonic welding process joins non-ferrous metals: the materials are stacked on top of each other and subjected to high-frequency mechanical vibrations under low pressure. The relative movement locally heats the contact surfaces. Within fractions of a second, a permanent, pure connection with good electrical properties is created, without significant thermal stress.

Heterogeneous combinations such as aluminum-copper or copper-brass can be joined with high mechanical integrity. Compared to conventional methods, cycles are short, energy consumption is low and no additional materials are needed.

Process reliability through monitoring

The ultrasonic welding systems from Schunk monitor the process and ensure reproducible connections. The systems are manufactured in accordance with current CE guidelines and undergo functional and quality assurance testing. The technology is used in continuous industrial production.

Electrical

Long-term stable contact resistance

Compared to crimping, the contact resistance drops to nearly zero and remains constant over long periods. In crimp connections, resistance can increase after several years due to relaxation and micro-movements. Ultrasonically welded connections show no significant change even after ten years. Added benefits are shorter assembly times and savings in weight and space.
